Udisc - The app that changed the game
Most people would be surprised to know that disc golf has been around in a formal setting since at last the 1970’s. Since then there have been baskets, discs, and some general way to build a course. Back in those days if you kept score at all it was usually in your head, or if it was some kind of formal event you did it on a paper score card. That is when you knew you had made the big time!
Finding courses to play was through word of mouth, or if you were hardcore you found them through the ‘disc golfers magazine’. Mostly the game was played by a loosely organized group of dedicated people who loved the game. That was good enough for the time and place, but as things often do, times change.
As disc golf grew in popularity more and more people wanted to share the game. Those who were new to it wanted to find their own entry way in. A couple of friends from Minnesota were especially feeling that way and so they made it their mission to create an app they could share with their friends and show them all of the beautiful courses their state had to offer. They officially launched a then unheard of app called Udisc to the wider world. Little did we know this app would drastically change the game of disc golf for good and be a major reason why our game grew like it did.
The simple mission of Udisc is to ‘Empower the world to play more disc golf’. By every metric possibly they are succeeding in that pursuit. Udisc is a one stop shop for all things related to the game. It lists every course in the world including ours which you can find here, here, and even here. It tells you the amenities they have, directions, and gives you a general rating to know what kind of course you are getting into. It also allows you to track your round scores, and shows you how many courses you have played and keeps your lifetime stats. They produce articles on a variety of disc golf topics and have a wonderful support staff for events. They are, without a doubt, the gold standard for our game. The best part is you can sign up for free.
It is hard to express how much difference this app has made. It makes searching for courses on your road trips so easy it is almost comical. I have personally spent many a great evening with the course maps open plotting a route for my trip to hit as many 4.5 rated courses (or higher) as possible. I have also been pleasantly surprised with some courses with significantly lower ratings. Basically it has made finding the game, the rules, and what to expect easier and more efficient, thus breaking down one of the biggest barriers to entry disc golf faces. Udisc makes it easy to be a part of the game. Not only that but Udisc has quantified how many people are actually playing the game which in turn incentives more places to invest in new courses or existing course upgrades. Once you start to track it, you value it more, and Udisc has really shown the value our game possesses.
As a special incentive for every round or layout you chose to play on opening day Saturday you will be entered into a give away contest for some gift certificates to the mountain. If you don’t already have a Udisc account, create one then click on any of our layouts. Keep score on opening day and we will enter you in our contest. It doesn’t get much more simple than that!
