Experiencing Peak Disc Golf
Last week our beautiful mountain played host to a small PDGA (professional disc golf association) event. It may not have looked like a big deal to a casual observer but in many ways it was the apex of disc golf experiences. It was played on a course that had been built with 14 months of labour and 20+ years of lived history. It was beautiful, joyous, and challenging and brought together a perfect mix of locals and experienced disc golfers. It was everything a designer could hope for.
Disc golf took a long time to take root in east coast Canada. It sputtered in various spots in the region as far back as the 90’s when the game was basically unheard of. It tried to reemerge in the mid 2000s with limited success with a few private courses. Eventually the tide turned and disc golf became a real thing in Atlantic Canada. We hosted 5 national championships from 2017-2022, had a course listed in the top 3 in the world, and began to appeal to a wider and wider local base of wildly diverse players. As of the start of 2026 there are now over 100 courses in Atlantic Canada with the vast majority of them being considered successful cornerstones of the recreational options each of their communities offer.
Our facility in Wentworth is the direct result of all of the courses that have come before it. We learned from what went right and what could be improved upon. We will continue to learn every day we are open. We are certainly not perfect but we have something that is truly special on this mountain and we are doing our best to create ways for people to experience this place in all of its glory. That is how we got to peak disc golf.
What exactly is peak disc golf you might be asking? First off, it is a layout on our Udisc app that you can find here. It includes all of the holes on the peak of our mountain. it has been created using the best possible building practices we have amassed. The forest was shaped by following sustainable forestry practices. We left as many trees standing as possible. We prioritized a healthy forest first. There is shade that is cast on the majority of our fairways. We left mulch on the ground, prioritized a diverse tree species that vary in age. We left standing deadwood whenever possible and designed the layout to avoid as many sensitive areas as we could. We made walking trails by the most interesting trees. We used recycled materials whenever we could to make parts of the tee pads. We dug gravel from the site where we could find it and made benches out of the trees we harvested. We did our absolute best to not waste anything.
That is just the structure, the course itself is also a reflection of what we have learned and what we think we know. There are easy(ish) holes, hard holes, and some holes that seem impossible (they are not impossible). In order to access this layout you can either choose to walk up the mountain, play a 9 hole course to get up the mountain, or take the chairlift up. Obviously the chairlift has a monetary cost but we are hoping that people see the value in experiencing the climb in whatever way makes you the happiest. There are points on this course, several of them actually, where if you stop and listen you can’t hear any other sounds than the birds and the breezes blowing through the trees. The forest is lush and contains every beautiful thing you would want to feel from a day spent frolicing in the woods. All of these things are what truly make this ‘peak disc golf’.
More than that we are hoping this course, this layout, and this experience offer you something genuine. We believe this layout feels different. It is intentional and it was created for people to enjoy. As the designer I have lost all perspective on the place. I have been in these woods more in the last 14 months than anywhere else, even home. Every time I get to witness a new player walk through the course or hear the sounds of laughter or frustration through the trees I am reminded of just how lucky we are to have a place like this to play. If you ever wanted a reason to try the game consider peak disc exactly that. All that is left is for you to experience it yourself.
